Natural law or the law of nature (Latin: lex naturalis) has been described as a law whose content is set by nature and that therefore has validity everywhere. As classically used, natural law refers to the use of reason to analyze human nature and deduce binding rules of moral behavior. The phrase natural law is opposed to the positive law (which is man-made) of a given political community, society, or nation-state, and thus can function as a standard by which to criticize that law. In natural law jurisprudence, on the other hand, the content of positive law cannot be known without some reference to the natural law (or something like it). Used in this way, natural law can be invoked to criticize decisions about the statutes, but less so to criticize the law itself. Some use natural law synonymously with natural justice or natural right (Latin ius naturale), although most contemporary political and legal theorists separate the two. Natural law theories have exercised a profound influence on the development of English common law, and have featured greatly in the philosophies of Thomas Aquinas, Francisco Suárez, Richard Hooker, Thomas Hobbes, Hugo Grotius, Samuel von Pufendorf, John Locke, Francis Hutcheson, Jean Jacques Burlamaqui, and Emmerich de Vattel. Because of the intersection between natural law and natural rights, it has been cited as a component in United States Declaration of Independence and the Constitution of the United States. The essence of Declarationism is that the founding of the United States is based on Natural law. From Wikipedia under the

Explain the focus on the idea of natural law as an extension of human nature during the conclusion of the seventeenth century. To what extent do you agree that the entire physical world is governed by such laws? this is the question i need to answer for my paper please help!!! Asked by pookie - Sat Mar 21 18:22:18 2009 - - 1 Answers - 0 Comments A. If you cannot explain something in simple terms then you do not understand it yourself..A reminder to myself;) Look to the natural laws for examples of Human nature. Man fears water because it drowns a man when misused;thus all of mans "natural" behavior is understood. The natural order of darkness brings with it the unseen dangers. Thus man's "natural" behavior is understood. The order of Love is not defined by the natural orders man utilizes, thus, his "natural" behavior is not "natural" but preconceived. His natural love would include natural selection, now wouldn't it? To seek a mate from his own kind, own neighbors and his own mindset? of course! His behavior would be readily understood.;) Answered by Daanl - Tue Mar 24 10:07:45 2009 What specific natural or human species capacities are singled out by natural law theorists? Q. Q. What is the difference between natural law and the law of nature? Asked by mikami - Mon Jan 7 08:38:21 2008 - - 4 Answers - 0 Comments A. I'm afraid none of these answers are at all correct. Natural Law is an ethical precept (dating back to the Stoics) that says that Law is inherent and found in nature, and is therefore valid everywhere. "Laws of nature" is a more modern, not to mention more scientific, way of saying what is essentially the same thing - only more narrow in scope. "Laws of nature" tend to refer to scientic dicta or principles, and almost never mean refer to ethical principles (like the Stoics did, when they spoke of natural law.)
