Child Rape is a henious crime, but should people be killed for it? I am disappointed with his swing to the right. How many would now rather vote for Nader or McKinney?

A. I am not a fan of capital punishment in this country for various reasons, but the issue at large is not the crucial one in my vote. In any case, however, I think Obama *is* pandering, but I do not think he is being a hypocrite---what I think is actually worse; the reasons why are likely to be overlooked by people emotionally reacting to monsters who are easy to hate, like child molesters. See, Obama and his campaign know that this is an easy thing for Obama to protest against, because anyone who questions the bigger issues involved are easily denounced as being heartless sympathizers with child rapists, etc. etc. Obama writes in one of his books that he thinks that "the community" should influence which people determined "guilty" by a… [cont.]

A. The most glaring example is the victory of California's Proposition 8, which bans same-sex marriage. Church groups, especially Mormons, spent hundreds of thousands of dollars to prevent gay people having committed lives together. Mormons and fundamentalists somehow believe that the lives of gay people damage the lives of straight people, and therefore must be stopped and gay people punished. Another recent example involves Michael Phelps, who was photographed smoking marijuana. His picture has been on the front of Wheaties boxes because of his Olympic medals, but now Kellogg is dumping him for being a bad example. They're not making him live with a scarlet A on his forehead, but the current publicity is close to being that bad.
