How long do you have to live in a different state to pay in-state tuition?
Q. I live in Pennsylvania. I'm a junior in high school and I would like to travel out of-state for college. However, out of-state tuition for public schools is more than it is for in-state schools. My question is, if I attended an out of-state school freshman year then got an apartment there for sophomore year-senior year, would I be able to pay in-state tuition? If not, then can anyone tell me how long I'd have to live in that state to pay in-state tuition? Thanks!

A. As long as you moved to another state for the purpose of going to college, you will never be deemed an in state resident. Also as someone else stated, you can't be in school during the time you are using to gain residency. Lots of folks make the assumption as you do, that after a year or two they will be switched to in state. This is simply NOT the case. It's pretty much a "once an out of state resident, always an out of state resident". Also note there are many more things you would have to do than simply living there. The hardest for most kids is be 100% self supporting and working full time, new drivers licence, voter ID, library card, buy a house perhaps or sign a lease... re-tag your car, maintain your own insurance on your own… [cont.]

What state can i file for visitation rights for my child?
Q. I had a son born in California in 2000 (me and the mother resided in California) Soon after the mother and child moved to another state and so did i. I now live in another state, the child and mother lives in Pennsylvania. If neither party still lives in California, where would i file for visitation rights?

A. If there was any action ever filed in California, you tell the court that when you file for visitation rights in a different state. Since the child is in PA now, that would be the place to go.

What state would you reccomend us buying a home in?
Q. Hi, my husband and I are currently living in Boston with our preschooler, and were looking to move out of state and purchase a home before she enters school fulltime. We're open to all ideas. A family friendly, safer place, preferably with wonderful school systems. We're getting tired of Mass, as we both have lived in this state our whole lives.
